I had a great time at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival – a fantastic week long event full of incredible musicians in the beautiful setting of Bantry Town. My piece “Collector’s Item” was played by the wonderfully talented young Cairde Quartet, from Cork. I was amazed by the groups talent and enthusiasm to get their teeth stuck into a piece of contemporary music.
The piece was a winning entry to the Cork County Council / Contemporary Music Centre Bursary award. It is inspired by the joint traditions of Chamber Music and Traditional Fiddle playing – the group switches between contrapuntal playing and high energy rhythmic unison. Kevin Volans and Meshuggah were two definite influences for this piece. Audio below
